The Bhakti Yoga India Tour is a 2-week kirtan camp and pilgrimage tour to the holy land of Braj, India. Dates for the tour are December 5-18, 2010.

Kirtan or chanting is an important part of bhakti yoga or the yoga of devotion. Kirtan chants have been composed in praise of the divine for hundreds, if not thousands, of years by generations of Saints in India. There is a long history of this celebration of sound and feeling in the poetic expressions from the Saints of Braj.

Braj is a ancient pilgrimage area located only 150 kilometers south of New Delhi. It is revered as the land of divine love.

Thousands from India and around the world visit this region every year and it is considered one of the holiest places of India, and a pilgrimage here is honored as a means of spiritual upliftment and transformation.

A spiritual yatra or pilgrimage of Braj traditionally takes place in the fall. This is considered the best time to visit the thousands of shrines and other religious monuments in the area and at this time that one can hear kirtan being uttered or sung on every pilgrimage footpath, in every temple, from morning until night.

Barsana is one of the most important areas in this district. The village's most prominent feature is a famous temple built on a small hill in the late 18th century. The culture of the area is replete with numerous events related to Radha and Krishna and so sites commemorating these events abound everywhere.

The tour will be based in Rangeeli Mahal Ashram in the heart of Barsana. Kirtan in the atmosphere of Braj, which has a long and significant history of devotional kirtan writings, is deeply inspiring. Ashram accommodations are within walking distance of places of great historical and religious significance and it offers an opportunity for an authentic experience of spiritual immersion. Rangeeli Mahal provides all the basic amenities for a comfortable stay.

An exploration of bhakti yoga from this base allows participants to engage in introductory classes on how to play and sing kirtan or sacred chants. The curriculum includes learning the basics of Indian music, how to play the harmonium and Indian drum or dholak, as well as sessions on how to strengthen and improve the voice.

Daily yoga and philosophy classes round out the curriculum and give participants the deepest insight into the land, culture and spiritual wisdom of Braj.

No previous music training or kirtan experience is required. Register online.
