The Kurilian Bobtail is new and rare breed of cat originating from Kuril islands in the Far East of Russia. In the middle of the 20th century some Kurilians were brought to mainland Russia by the members of the military or scientist missions after which they quickly gained popularity. The Kurilian was first shown in 1991 and then the breed standard was adopted by Soviet Felenology Federation. The breed was officially recognized by WCF in 1995.

Size and Appearance
The distinguishing feature of the Kurilian Bobtail is its extremely short tail. The short tail is not a result of breeders' selections but of a natural mutation. The Kurilian is a very natural breed and thus suffer few health problems.. The Kurilian Bobtail is a middle or large size muscular cat. The coat is of medium length, thick and silky, longer at cheeks and back with a distinct ruff.

Temperament and Personality
These cats have well-balanced character. Despite their wild look they are gentle, intelligent and enjoy human company. Kurilians were both land and water hunters on their home islands and unlike other cats they like playing in water.
