American Shorthair

This hardy cat with its tough back ground makes an excellent pet, not easily affected by ailments or disease. The American Shorthair is independent and likes to roam free, so maybe more suited to out of town living than to apartment life. In the house, it will continue to 'hunt, chasing and pouncing on whatever moves with velvet paws. It enjoys excursions in the open air and is typically active and curious. Being a robust natural breed, it makes a trouble free pet with an affectionate, companion able nature. It also makes an excellent working mouser.

Grooming
The coat of the American Shorthair is very easily maintained. However, it should be combed regularly to avoid a fur ball forming in the stomach. Regular attention should also be paid to the eyes and ears to make sure they are clean and free from ear mites.

Origin and history
These cats are reputed to have come to the United States with the original settlers from Europe, who brought them on their ships, not only as companions but as working rodent officers. Every ship had its cat or cats to protect the ship's stores, and many would have left ship in the New World and been missing when it sailed again. These cats mated freely without restriction or regard for pedigree or for any colour discrimination. After years of separation from the parent European stock, they developed characteristics of their own. Although they are still quite similar to the British Shorthair, American Shorthairs are larger, with less rounded heads and with longer noses. Years of free ranging ancestry have also made this a hardy, fearless, intelligent breed.

Breeding
American Shorthairs make good breeders and sensible mothers. They have endless patience.

Kittens
The kittens are confident, courageous and not prone to disease.
