Exotic Shorthair

If you like the docile nature of the Persian but do not have the time to groom a longhaired cat, this may be the breed for you. The Exotic Shorthair is really a hybrid breed, produced by crossing a Persian with an American Shorthair, and resulting in a 'Persian with short hair'. In looks it resembles a Persian, with its short, snub nose and wide cheeks, cobby body and short tail, yet it has a much more manageable coat. The Exotic also combines the best characteristics of both breeds, having a quiet, gentle nature and an even-tempered, sweet disposition, yet being alert, playful and responsive. It is not as destructive about the house as some of the more energetic breeds, and therefore makes an ideal pet, ever willing to please its owner.

Grooming
The Exotic Shorthair is easy to groom but the coat must be combed daily to remove dead hairs, so that too many are not swallowed and a hair ball formed in the stomach. The coat is short, but plush, so a medium-toothed comb would be best, with the occasional use of a rubber spiked brush for massage.

Origin and history
The Exotic Shorthair was deliberately developed to satisfy the desire of some breeders to have a Persian type cat with a short coat. The results have been good. At first, Persians were mated to both American Shorthairs and Burmese, but now the cross is restricted to American Shorthairs. From 1966, these hybrids became known as Exotic Shorthairs at American shows.

Kittens
Exotic kittens are playful but not too boisterous, and they love other animals and people. They respond well to gentle handling and lots of affection.
