What is a furball?

A furball (or hairball) is an accumulation of hair in the cat's stomach that occurs as a direct result of him grooming himself. A solid mass of hair forms which rubs against the lining of the stomach; this irritation prompts the cat to vomit the furball up. If the furball lodges further down the digestive tract, it may cause a blockage; if this occurs, the cat may show signs of a decreased appetite, constipation and general lethargy. Seek veterinary attention if you suspect a furball blockage. Grooming your cat regularly will help prevent problems of this nature.
