Arthritis in Cats

This causes inflammation of the joints. There are two forms of arthritis that may affect cats — osteoarthritis and traumatic arthritis.

Symptoms
Swollen joints, difficulty in walking, and lameness.

Causes
stcoarthritis may be a condition in itself or a result of other conditions. It is a progressive and painful disease that will seriously affect the quality of life of the affected cat. It may affect one or more joints, and the seriousness of the condition will depend on which joints are affected, and the general health of the cat. Osteoarthritis is not nearly as common in cats as it is in dogs. Overweight cats are more prone to osteoarthritis. Traumatic arthritis is caused as a direct result of an injury to the joint; for example, it may be the result of a road traffic accident or a sprain while exercising.

What to do
Your vet will advise you on what action you should take, as this will depend on the underlying causes and treatment being given.

Treatment

The treatment for arthritis may include anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers, and in some cases surgery may be needed. All cases of osteoarthritis should he treated seriously. Don't wait until your cat cannot walk before consulting the vet. A physical examination and observation of the cat's movement, along with X-rays and analysis of
