Constipation - Cats suffer it too.

Constipation - Cats suffer it too.
Symptoms
A cat producing extremely dry faeces, or straining to defecate, is probably constipated. Every cat and his lifestyle is different, but cats should be expected to defecate one to four times daily.

Causes
Any debilitating disease can cause constipation, as can a foreign body blocking the cat's digestive system (usually this occurs in the intestines). Constipation can also be a symptom of prostate problems in male cats.

What to do
Providing your cat with a diet high in fibre and giving a good overall balanced diet will help prevent many cases of constipation.

Treatment
Where an internal blockage is the cause, the cat will need surgery. In cases linked with diet, laxatives and a change of diet may be all that is needed. Constipation is potentially very dangerous, so always consult your vet when it occurs.
