Feline Contraception

It is possible to administer a hormone treatment to female cats to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but there are drawbacks to prolonged birth-control treatment. It could cause fertility problems if you wish to breed from the cat later; it could also result in side-effects that include increased appetite, weight gain, lethargy, behavioural problems and uterine disease.
It is also possible to use contraceptive drugs to prevent an unwanted pregnancy once mating has taken place (misalliance) — rather like the human `morning-after' pill.



REPRODUCTION
nce the female is ready, matings are repeated 10-20 times a day for up to six days. Only the fitter, stronger males can sustain this, which means that kittens in the same litter can sometimes have several fathers. This promiscuous behaviour not only ensures that the chances of conception are maximized, but also that the kittens have a variety of characters to increase the next generation's chances of successful procreation.
