Feline infectious enteritis (FIE)

Also called feline panleukopenia, this widespread, life-threatening viral disease attacks the white blood cells and the cat's gut.

Symptoms
These include loss of appetite, persistent vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

Causes
The virus is passed from one infected cat to others by direct or indirect contact.

What to do
This disease is highly infectious, so isolate any infected cats. To guard against it, make sure your cat is
vaccinated and receives regular boosters.

Treatment
There is no real treatment for FIE, but special care and intensive nursing may alleviate the symptoms. Seek immediate veterinary treatment for any cat showing symptoms of this disease. A severe infection may kill a young cat or kitten very quickly.
