Cat's and Taste

It seems that the cat's tongue can differentiate between food items that taste salty, sour, bitter or sweet. Most cats appear to like salty things, but can vary considerably in their reaction to sweet foods. Taste alone does not seem to be important to most cats, but this is how tiny kittens, on first leaving the nest, test most new surfaces and objects — by licking them carefully and methodically, and with great concentration. Just how the information received in this way is analysed and stored is not known, and it occurs only during the most sensitive period of learning in the young cat.
